You remember the drama. Here's what it was actually about.
Accreditation is how students, employers, and taxpayers know an NIC degree is the real deal - an independent check that the college is healthy and preparing people for real jobs. Without it, credits don’t transfer and students lose access to financial aid. For a few years, the way NIC’s board ran things put that at risk. In February 2026, NIC 's good standing was restored.

What the accreditor actually said
The short version
NIC has been accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) since 1947 — and it stayed accredited the whole time. The review was about how the elected Board of Trustees was running things, not about NIC’s teachers, classes, or finances.
How it unfolded

A formal warning
The accreditor issues a warning. NIC stays accredited.
Show-cause sanction
The most serious step short of losing accreditation. The college is told to show why it should keep it.

Sanction eased
Citing real progress, the accreditor drops the sanction from show-cause to probation.
Inspectors visit campus

Good standing restored
The sanction is lifted. NIC’s accreditation is reaffirmed and the review is over.
What “board governance” means
A Board of Trustees sets the college’s direction — hiring the president, approving budgets, and setting policy. It doesn’t run the college day to day or decide what teachers teach. The accreditor’s concern was how the board did that job.
And that’s what got fixed. The board built a full set of governance policies in 2023 with the Association of Community College Trustees, evaluators confirmed it was working in 2026, and NIC trustees are now invited to teach other colleges how it’s done.
The accreditor’s actions were about governance and leadership — not classroom instruction, academic quality, or diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.
